Government steps in to purchase Cattle Farm to save Great Barrier Reef

In an unprecedented decision a state government in Australia has bought a cattle station for $7 million in order stem extensive sediment pollution which has been exacerbating the effects of coral bleaching due to climate change. The sediment clouds the water, preventing photosynthesis which the corals need to recover.

In remedying the effects of this property with the aid of conservation groups, the government has the power to almost half the amount of sediment which runs into the Normanby River System and contributed permanent damage to the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World,  home to 10% of the entire world’s fish species. Making decisions which will prevent the further destruction of this delicate ecosystem which inspired #findingnemo and #findingdory is  monumental and should be applauded. Thank you Queensland Government!
